Pre-Tattoo Prep: How to Get Your Skin Ready Before the Needle Touches

Tattoo care starts before the needle touches your skin, good prep means smoother sessions, better healing, and longer-lasting colour.
Written by Sonia Tolstoy

Most people think tattoo care starts once the wrap comes off. Artists know better.
The quality of your skin before the session shapes everything that follows. Healing, colour retention, even how smoothly the tattoo goes down.

One week before your tattoo

Hydrate properly. Eat properly. Moisturise daily either Bamboogoo or Liquid Gold. Healthy skin stretches and recovers better.
Avoid aggressive exfoliation, new skincare routines, or anything that might irritate or sensitise the area.

The day before

Clean skin. No last-minute tanning, or “quick fixes.” Don't shave the area you're about to get tattooed - your artist will do this for you. Let your skin arrive calm, not reactive.

On the day

Clean, dry skin. Artists need a surface that behaves predictably.
Good pre-care is considered. It’s respectful. It makes the session smoother and healing easier.

If aftercare protects the result, pre-care protects the process.
